As silly Sid Hartman items go, today's was a doozy. And, privately, University of Minnesota officials and Vikings executives are shaking their heads and mumbling about the origins of Hartman's notion today that the NFL team can — maybe even will — move permanently into an expanded TCF Bank Stadium on campus rather than a new made-for-the-Vikes facility in downtown Minneapolis.

My Twins MVP ballot

Now that everyone has had a couple weeks to get over how the Twins' season ended, it seems like a good time to examine who the most valuable (and least valuable) players on the team were this year. There are certainly lots of different ways to approach such a task, but my preferred method is to use several different player-evaluation metrics and attempt to synthesize the information from them to form what should be one well-rounded opinion.

An analysis of Major League Baseball ticket prices finds the Twins consistently below the league-wide average, but that likely will change with the team's move to Target Field. Of the other area pro franchises, only the Timberwolves have been below their respective league's average ticket price.

The 163-game marathon: successful disappointment

Losing 1-0 on the road in a one-game playoff is an awfully tough way for things to end and leaves me sort of shell-shocked when it comes to looking back at the Twins' season. For the most part, fans seem to fall into two categories regarding the Twins this year, either viewing their 88-win, second-place finish as gravy because of low expectations or seeing their late-season collapse as a disappointing failure to take advantage of an unexpectedly weak division. For me, their season falls somewhere in between.

Twins-Sox showdown: Two down, one to go

Lack of power and shoddy bullpen work have been two of the Twins' weaknesses. They rank dead last among AL teams in homers, and since Pat Neshek suffered a season-ending arm injury the non-Joe Nathan members of the bullpen have combined for a 4.54 ERA. So naturally in the season's biggest series they hit three homers Tuesday night and got four shutout innings of relief last night. Baseball can be a funny game, but with the Twins now a half-game back in the AL Central, you knew that already.

NEW YORK — For those of us who measure our memories in brick, mortar and alabaster, these are the final days of a certain era of baseball in New York City. It saw the Yankees return to prominence and universal hatred, while the upstart Mets wrestled them for the city's affections. So please indulge me. If you bleed Twins, you may be doing some of this yourself, very soon.

Move over, soccer moms. Sarah Palin has put their replacement in the spotlight. Hockey moms — the newest political demographic — are active and overly busy. Hockey moms are politically skillful, and hockey moms are featured in their own specialty publication and website — and even idolized in song (by a group called the Zambonis, of course).

With his speed and aggressiveness, Carlos Gomez has the ability to change a ballgame. But after five years in the pros, he's still considered "raw" by major league standards. In his first eight games, his flashy style has excited Twins fans and occasionally exasperated more than one baseball veteran. He's got a lot to learn but seems willing to give it a go.

TEMPE, ARIZ. — After nine seasons, Torii Hunter left his teammates and loyal Minnesota fans late last year for the green pastures — and "greener" contract — in California. He's had a strong spring and, by all accounts, fits in well with the Los Angeles Angels. Secure now with a $90 million, five-year deal, he still can't help but wonder what kind of reaction he'll get Monday, when he returns to the familiar Metrodome confines of center field.
