Deep down in their blue hearts, DFLers know they missed a huge opportunity Tuesday. Yes, Barack Obama easily won in Minnesota, but GOP Chairman Ron Carey's smile is genuine. It easily could have been much worse for his party. Republicans held on to three House seats and, maybe, the hotly contested U.S. Senate seat. All four were as winnable as they'll ever be for the DFL.

The DFL picked up two seats in the Minnesota House on Election Day. Though the party remains three seats shy of a veto-proof majority there, it has one in the Senate, and the potential to control the upcoming legislative session. Trouble is, there's this little budget problem to deal with.
