In "W.," Oliver Stone's meticulous re-enactment of the public and private Bush, mythic and televised, announced and uncovered, the filmmaker effectively seizes control of the grand narrative. The release of the movie in thousands of theaters, while its subject is still in office, is its own proof that the official White House story has reached what an old-fashioned movie would announce explicitly as "The End."

"This is the kind of movie that's going to make my life harder," says Jennifer Dunnam, president of the National Federation of the Blind of Minnesota. "The people in this movie just seem to lose all capacity for creativity and for taking care of themselves, and it's a problem when real people already think that about blind people."
